Manolo Desco reached the degrees of MD, MSEng and PhD, and is specialist in Nuclear Medicine. He is Professor at the Bioengineering and Aerospace Engineering Dept. of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Head of Service of the Research Dept. of the Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón in Madrid. He also leads the Advanced Imaging Unit at Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovascuilares (CNIC).
He has worked as medical practitioner, entrepreneur and researcher in Biomedical Engineering. His research activities have mainly addressed the field of medical imaging, including the development of advanced techniques for image acquisition (MRI, PET, etc.) and postprocessing, either for quantification, multimodality registration or computer aided diagnosis. A significant amount of work has been devoted to the development of high-performance devices for small-animal molecular imaging, used in biomedical research. Presently, most efforts are devoted to foster and support innovation and technology transfer from Hospitals.

Full Professor of Surgery (accredited as Professor) at the Complutense University of Madrid and Medical Director of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos, where he was Head of the Colorectal Surgery Section (2010-2016). Since 2010 he has been Director of the Innovation Unit of the San Carlos Health Research Institute (IdSSC), member of the Center for Surgical Studies of the Department of Surgery of the UCM and trustee of the San Carlos Biomedical Research Foundation, where he also serves as Vice-President.
He has been a member of the editorial board of BJS (journal formerly known as the British Journal of Surgery), joining the board of directors in April 2015. Since June 2018 he has been Secretary of the BJS Company, a “charity” from where he works together with the rest of the Executive Committee to advance and improve the training of surgeons and to spread knowledge of new and better methods of teaching and practicing surgery in all its branches, through BJS and BJS Open. Recently, he has begun coordinating the Digital Media and Innovations Editorial Board of the journal Surgery. In addition, he is on the editorial board of the Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, World Journal of Gastroenterology, Turkish Journal of Surgery, and European Journal of Anatomy, where he is also Social Media Editor.
His academic training was carried out at the Faculty of Medicine of the Complutense University and he obtained his PhD at the same center in 1992. He trained as a general and digestive system surgeon at the Hospital Clínico San Carlos in Madrid, with a clinical rotation at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston in 1994. After completing his residency, he joined the Department of Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center with his mentor, Prof. Jeffrey B. Matthews, and the Harvard Digestive Diseases Center as a Research Fellow in Surgery at Harvard Medical School.
