She received the Innovators under 35 MIT Technology Review Spanish edition award for the invention that led to the incorporation of the company GlyCardial Diagnostics in 2017, and which has managed to raise more than €5M so far between private and public funding.

 

He has participated in several entrepreneurship programs (Caixaimpulse) and acceleration of social impact projects (Tech4Health of Ship2B Foundation). Manolo Desco reached the degrees of MD, MSEng and PhD, and is specialist in Nuclear Medicine. He is Professor at the Bioengineering and Aerospace Engineering Dept. of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Head of Service of the Research Dept. of the Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón in Madrid. He also leads the Advanced Imaging Unit at Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovascuilares (CNIC).

 

He has worked as medical practitioner, entrepreneur and researcher in Biomedical Engineering. His research activities have mainly addressed the field of medical imaging, including the development of advanced techniques for image acquisition (MRI, PET, etc.) and postprocessing, either for quantification, multimodality registration or computer aided diagnosis. A significant amount of work has been devoted to the development of high-performance devices for small-animal molecular imaging, used in biomedical research. Presently, most efforts are devoted to foster and support innovation and technology transfer from Hospitals.

 

He has supervised 15 PhD Theses, published more than 500 papers and has participated or coordinated more than 80 national / international research projects and excellence networks, for instance “Molecular and Multimodality Medical Imaging”, IM3, or the Spanish platform on Technological Innovation in Hospitals (ITEMAS).

 

He has authored 30 patents and several developments from his Laboratory have been transferred to the industry, becoming commercial products with worldwide distribution.

 

Some relevant awards received were the UNICEM prize to technological innovation (2004) and Galien prize to best research trajectory (2008) or the award to innovative researcher 2013 from the Spanish forum of innovative enterprises. He is full member of the Spanish Academy of Medicine and Surgery (2014).

Maite Fibla holds a PhD in economics and is firmly convinced that impact investing is the future, which is why she works together with entrepreneurs and investors to promote startups with high social and environmental impact and profitable business models.

 

She began her professional career in the academic world at the Rovira y Virgili University, passing through the University of Maastricht and the UPC School, focusing her research in the field of strategy and business competitiveness.

 

In 2009, he made the leap from academia to the public sector with the aim of promoting entrepreneurship and impact investment by collaborating in different public-private projects. Four years later, in 2013, together with two other partners he decided to create the Ship2B Foundation, an organization that accelerates and invests in high social impact startups and has been recognized by Funcas as the best private accelerator in Spain.

 

In the last 7 years the Ship2B Foundation has accelerated more than 160 startups that have raised more than 59 MM€. It also has an investment vehicle of €4.5MM that has invested in 23 high impact startups in the fields of health, education, environment and vulnerable groups.

He was Head of Safety and Efficacy of Medicines at the European Medicines Agency (EMA) during 2005-2012, and previously held leadership positions in the biopharmaceutical industry for more than eighteen years, covering international clinical development, drug safety, pharmacovigilance, biostatistics and medical affairs.

In addition to Dr. Luria’s specialty in internal medicine, and pharmaceutical medicine and biostatistics (University Autonomous Barcelona), he has developed expertise in several specific therapeutic areas, carried out postgraduate qualification in clinical pharmacology, drug development and regulation (Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston), and he is a recognized expert on regulatory systems and benefit-risk assessment (modelling, development and methodologies).

Furthermore, he is member of the Board of Directors of the IFAPP-King’s College Postgraduate Course, Senior Visiting Lecturer at the King’s College in London and lecturer at several other academic institutions in Europe and USA. Full Professor of Surgery (accredited as Professor) at the Complutense University of Madrid and Medical Director of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos, where he was Head of the Colorectal Surgery Section (2010-2016). Since 2010 he has been Director of the Innovation Unit of the San Carlos Health Research Institute (IdSSC), member of the Center for Surgical Studies of the Department of Surgery of the UCM and trustee of the San Carlos Biomedical Research Foundation, where he also serves as Vice-President.

 

He has been a member of the editorial board of BJS (journal formerly known as the British Journal of Surgery), joining the board of directors in April 2015. Since June 2018 he has been Secretary of the BJS Company, a “charity” from where he works together with the rest of the Executive Committee to advance and improve the training of surgeons and to spread knowledge of new and better methods of teaching and practicing surgery in all its branches, through BJS and BJS Open. Recently, he has begun coordinating the Digital Media and Innovations Editorial Board of the journal Surgery. In addition, he is on the editorial board of the Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, World Journal of Gastroenterology, Turkish Journal of Surgery, and European Journal of Anatomy, where he is also Social Media Editor.

 

His academic training was carried out at the Faculty of Medicine of the Complutense University and he obtained his PhD at the same center in 1992. He trained as a general and digestive system surgeon at the Hospital Clínico San Carlos in Madrid, with a clinical rotation at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston in 1994. After completing his residency, he joined the Department of Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center with his mentor, Prof. Jeffrey B. Matthews, and the Harvard Digestive Diseases Center as a Research Fellow in Surgery at Harvard Medical School.

 

Upon his return to Madrid, he joined the Surgery Service I of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos, where he established two units, surgical oncology and image-guided surgery, and a cellular physiology laboratory, with the support of Prof. Jesús Alvarez Fernández-Represa. Simultaneously, he obtained a position as associate professor in the Department of Surgery at UCM.

 

During this time, he expanded his professional activity as a visiting surgeon at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (1998), Minnesota Cancer Center (1999), Cincinnati Medical Center (2002), and as a visiting professor in the Department of Surgery at Wayne State University (2008). In addition, he completed a master’s degree in health services management at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at UCM.

As the CEO of the company, he transforms his knowledge and experience in health entrepreneurship into design and validation of business models, managing business projects that have so far culminated in over 150 successfully executed collaborative partnerships in the human and animal health sector.

Apart from his activity at Trifermed, he is a Adjunct Professor at the Forsyth Institute in Cambridge, MA (USA). Bernabé has extensive experience in the preparation of patentability opinions, patent infringement risk and validity studies, patent license negotiation and Due Diligence, as well as patent drafting, particularly in the areas of organic chemistry and pharmaceuticals.

He frequently acts as an expert witness before Spanish courts. Bernabé started working as a lecturer at the Patent Center of the University of Barcelona (UB) in 1988. He currently combines his work at the UB with his professional activity at ZBM.

Since its creation in 2015, Bernabé is also General Director of ZBM Business Connect, a spin-off of ZBM Patents & Trademarks dedicated to the optimization of technology transfer activities of private companies and public research institutions.

He is an expert in scientific and patent searches. For more than ten years he has been the representative in Spain of STN International and Chemical Abstracts Service.
